Every SIEM demo looks the same. Clean dashboards. Perfect data. An alert fires, the analyst clicks three times, incident resolved. The sales engineer smiles. Everyone nods.
Then you buy it.
Six months later, half the dashboards are empty because nobody finished the integrations. Alerts fire constantly — mostly noise, occasionally something real, but good luck telling which at 2am. The analyst who sat through the demo has quit. The new hire is staring at a query language nobody bothered to document.
This isn't a bug. This is the product working exactly as designed.
SIEM vendors sell a vision: centralized visibility, automated detection, faster response. What they ship is a platform — an expensive, empty container your team has to fill with data, tune into something useful, and maintain forever. That part wasn't in the demo.
The demo uses perfect data because real data is a mess. Inconsistent log formats. Sources that go silent for weeks. Timestamps in four different time zones. Corner cases you'll only discover in production, long after the contract is signed.
The demo skips training because training is boring. It assumes your team already knows the query language, understands the data model, has time to build detections. In reality, they're bolting this onto their actual jobs with no documentation and a Slack channel that goes quiet after week two.
A SIEM isn't a product. It's a project. A multi-year, resource-hungry project that needs dedicated people, constant tuning, and a level of organizational patience most security teams just don't have.
The gap between the demo and reality isn't an implementation failure. It's a honesty failure — about what these tools actually take and what most teams can actually give.
